Why women and why now?

Women have always played an important role in giving and supporting positive social change in Australia.
The need for increased charitable giving is greater than ever. Escalating rates of poverty, the housing crisis, more frequent natural disasters and the impacts of climate change are just some of the reasons why more Australians are turning to charities every day for help.

With women set to inherit 65 per cent of the $4.9 trillion that will be handed down in Australia’s largest intergenerational wealth transfer over the next 10 years, there is enormous opportunity for us to give, give more and give with greater impact.

She Gives shines a light on the power and collective contribution of women’s giving in Australia by sharing the inspiring stories of 100 women.

No matter the amount given, or the cause given to, each of these stories is an inspiring example of how we can all contribute to positive change.

Individuals, giving circles and funder collectives are catalysing and supporting progress on complex social and environmental issues, while others are supporting their local communities or focusing on a specific issue that is important to them.

Together we can learn from each other and inspire more people to start giving, give more, and give with greater impact to accelerate positive social change.

Celebrate the power of giving by women

Please join us in celebrating the collective contributions of women across Australia who are making a positive difference across many causes at many levels. By celebrating women's contributions, we hope to encourage other women to see themselves in the same light and recognise their potential to act as powerful agents for positive social change.

Share more stories of giving

Share your story, talk to a friend about giving, invite others to get involved. By sharing inspirational stories, we hope to inspire more to give, give more, and give more impactfully, harnessing the collective power, networks and ambition of women to grow giving in Australia.

Be inspired and help inspire others

She Gives is a campaign to inspire action and grow giving to any cause, at any level, that accelerates positive social change. We invite you to use our campaign tools, resources and connections to other organisations supporting women to help you start, grow or better your giving. If She Gives inspires you, let us know. Every positive action is a step in the right direction and helps build the data, evidence and case studies to drive a broader movement of women's giving in Australia.

How it started

She Gives began quietly, late one evening in 2022, at a dinner to announce the Stella Prize, Australia’s premier literary award celebrating women’s writing. After collaborating to raise $2million in 10 months from hundreds of women across Australia to secure the Stella Prize in perpetuity, Melissa whispered to Paula, ‘So, what’s next?’

‘What’s next’ became the culmination of a years-long wish to bring greater visibility to women’s giving in Australia to inspire others to give.

She Gives aims to amplify the conversation about giving and increase the visibility of women-led philanthropy. By doing so, we hope She Gives plays a part in accelerating a movement of women’s giving in Australia.

By acting collectively, we can inspire others to give, give more, and give with greater impact.

How it started
She Gives acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
